Heading towards Mercury
The scientists at CMR are preparing for a trip to the planet Mercury, the Sun’s closest neighbour.
After the spacecraft containing the two space probes are launched in 2014, it takes another six years for the probes to reach their destination. video
The space probes are created from materials which can survive extreme conditions and contains equipment that has to function for many years in a very inhospitable environment.
Currently, at CMR Prototech in Bergen, 87 simulation dummies are being designed and manufactured to help to ensure that the space probe will operate successfully after launch and when in space. The units are scheduled to be delivered already this summer (2010) to the Italian company Thales Alenia Space Italia.
